When the mug is cold the password to the famous map 'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good' is shown on the one side and footprints on the other side to give the impression that someone is walking about Hogwarts.

When hot Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot & Prong's Marauder's Map magically appears.

Once you have finished your drink the bottom of the mug reveals the password 'Mischief Managed' which is used to close the map.

As the mug cools the map gradually disappears and the original state of the mug returns.
